WIP - English Renaissance Dragon

Description

What better way to compliment the French Gendarme and his Dragon companion here: a3dkid.deviantart.com/art/WIP-… than drawing their English counterparts!

What warrior to go alongside the dragon was a bit tougher than the others. Originally I wanted to draw a Billman (the English Bill needs moar love as a weapon), but I already drew three infantrymen already (Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish), so I decided to draw the iconic English Longbowman because I need practice on posing with perspective. At first I was pretty worried, my story starts at around 1510 (after a discussion with :iconadiraiju:, I decided that this time period would be the best), I thought that longbowmen would be obsolete, but turns out they still had longbowmen as far as the English Civil War!

The design for this dragon involved much more thinking compared to the rest, as I already have two big dragons in mind and 3 wyrms, I didn't know how exactly can I make England's dragon unique. Then :iconjeffdalegend: and :icondinohunter2: provided me with HUGE inspirational sources. One is to take a look from how the "Original Flavor" Dragon (As Chris called it)  of the St. George tale looks, and combine it with more "Classic" dragons, like the Welsh one! The result is a dragon that can move like a wyrm, but has more limbs to cling on to surfaces like cliffsides and ceilings of caves. This also provides some useful world building tools! In this universe, Romans who founded "Londinium" inadvertantly drawn mediteranean "Wyrms" which then mated with the native, 4 legged dragons, and after a few generations, created the English variant we see here.

Another design quirk is the emphasis on the eye and the dragons expression. I wanted to create a wily expression for her, to diversify from the more "Angry" look of the rest. I also wanted to experiment on wing design, so I combined the wing-spikes of the Welsh dragon with the bat-like arms of the others, as a reference to the English dragon's mixed heritage.

The dragon here is also the first female dragon of the collection, with a much bulkier Imperial/german/austrian/???/(seriously the Holy Roman Empire is a mess) dragon I'm drawing after this being the other female of the set. I decided to have England's dragons be female-oriented for two reasons: 1. In-universe I wanted to further differentiate the English dragons with their continental counterparts and 2. One of my main characters is an English girl and a long-range weapon enthusiast, and is often compared in-universe to one of England's more famous dragons, so in essence, she combines aspects of both individuals in the picture.

Again a huge thank you to :iconjeffdalegend:, :icondinohunter2:, and :iconadiraiju: for the help, resources and art comments. The design wouldn't have worked without your input!

Holy cow, thanks for the shout-out! I particularly like this design, he seems to have quite a bit of power and maneuverability for a relatively small dragon! Kudos!
