Forest Brawl by a3dkid Forest Brawl by a3dkid
Story:

- Set 30 years since the event that changed Alia Terra forever, a couple of soldiers while doing a mission deep in the Jungles of Lacerta for reconnaisance, only to discover the existence of a kaiju much, much Larger and Stronger than any they encountered, Jovis.
Jovis is currently engaged with some of the fiercest pack hunters of Lacerta, The Marauders. known hunt humans and kaiju alike, since competition on the island is very, very intense. Thinking that Jovis, a slow, pondering usually non-agressive creature would be easy game, they soon will find out why Jovis's species were once the dominant predator of the isle...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
For this holiday, I wanted to do something much more ambitious than past deviations. This took the longest to work with due to the amount of ink and pencil shavings that took just to create the outlines.

For the first time, I used two pieces of lineart and try to make a single image out of it. The main element I want to try out is the light effects, based on the comments from my previous picture with Jovis. I also added blood effects, hopefully not too much that it needs to be put in the "Mature" section.

It was really satisfying to see the difference between this one and my previous deviations. Especially since I have to an Art project on animation over this holiday, and it would be good to try out what I learned here and apply it for school.

Please be sure to critique!

Oh that ain't Zilla! He's my own creation! Incidentally I think his head is a wee bit too blocky, so I may change it soon

Man, this is just... wow. You've really outdone yourself this time, 'kid. You've always been good, IMO, but you've come a long way since stuff like this: [link]

The musculature and anatomy, how well you drew the same creatures from different angles, the shadow work and lighting, the overall composition and sense of motion, the story it tells... this is killer stuff. Seriously, I think there's a lot of professionally done comic book art out there that doesn't look this good. This is a fantastic scene! I could sing it's praises all day, I really could. That wouldn't do you much good besides swell your ego though, so here are my thoughts on how you could make this even better:

- One, I'm just curious, what's the pale green shape in the lower right corner? It looks to me like the mouth of some dead creature, but if so I guess I don't know why it's that color. Is it meant to be glowing? Clearing that up would be nice.

- The gums of the Marauders could use more definition. The green one closest to us is fine but I think the paler ones on Jovis' back could use more detail there, especially the one on the right whose gums are just a solid color. I think the same could be said of their teeth and claws. Everything else seems to have at least subtle shading, but they don't; it makes them seem flatter than the rest of the image.

- I'm not 100% sure on this, but I do think the Marauder leaning over Jovis' shoulder would probably have a stronger shadow than that. It looks like he's right in the path of the sunbeams lighting the scene, so if so he'd be casting a much bigger, darker shadow than what he's got now.

- Just a minor thing, but I think the inside of Jovis' mouth could use more detail. It looks pretty smooth as it is.

To add on to critique #1, yeah it was meant to be brighter, as it's "on the edge" of the cliff/steep drop/something that the soldiers are standing on, but... I always felt something something was off...

Thanks! I never really expected to get that kind of compliment in regards to how my work can be compared to professional comic book art! In most of my artwork, a lot of those comics them were amongst the major inspiration to try and improve, especially in regards to motion and lighting. So your comment really means a lot to me.

In regards to improvements I agree wholeheartedly.

- The thing in the lower right corner is actually a finger, with the hand itself impaled by large wood pieces. Their mostly just for size comparison in regards to the humans

- On adding more detail to the gums, claws and teeth, I agree, especially in regards to the teeth, I believed that I shouldn't add too much detail on the teeth or else it'll look like a mess, but now that you mentioned it, yeah they could. The goal was to emulate a 3 dimensional feel.

- Probably... Though I was a little bit conflicted, I wanted to create an feel that was very bright on top and mellower on the bottom, so I didn't really focus on shadowing that specific region, BUT! I do understand where you're going at, and I'll definitely try to apply that in future works. This is my first time I actually did some really serious shadowing, so I'll try to improve on that.

- I wanted too... But, I thought to myself... What should be in it? I tried applying a tongue during the lineart, but all of the sudden it made it soooort of messy. Any suggestions?

Hmm, I see what you mean about the tongue. Some simple textural lines would probably suffice, though, just to show ridges and things.

Hmm... Alright, I think can see where your going at. For example to see areas where the teeth link with the gums/jawbone right?

I quite enjoy this, it has that primal feeling combined with an excellent portrayal of mass and scale. It evokes King Kong imagery with the Dore style darkened foreground and sense of chaos.

Why thank you very much! The King Kong (mostly from the 1930s and 2005 films) imagery was actually a major inspiration, mostly due to how much detail was given to the jungle environments and the lighting for it. I also loved how the 2005 movie managed to get Kong fighting the V-rexes at different angles very nicely, so I tried to emulate parts of that in my picture, except using several different creatures instead of one.

Again thanks for the comment! :)

:D I love how each of the Marauders has a look of fear and surprise! Definatley gives the fight more expression and depth. The two soldiers are placed nicely as they don't distract from the fight while adding some perspective.

In other words it's flippin' BRILLIANT!

Why thank you very much! I was worried that the soldiers might look just sliiight bit out of place in this peace, but I'm satisfied that you think they don't. Thanks for the comment on perspective! That was the major obstacle I had with this piece.

AWESOME!!! This piece is so EPIC!! Jovis is REALLY kicking ass here! Those things dont even stand a chance! All they're doing is just mearly skratching him. Thats why they deserve for messing with our beloved gentle giant! I wonder how shocked those things must have been when they realized Jovis is no slow and vulnerable creature. Those things kinda look like reptilian Cloverfields. Its really cool how Jovis tore one in half and crushed it with one of his fists. Hopefully you don't have to put a filter because of that.

Anyway, really awesome job dude! This came out really awesomely! I love the colors too! And as usual i LOVE Jovis!! I love seeing him every time! Hes just so awesome! I really love the perspective of this piec e as well as the pose you gave Jovis. Really awesome job! :)

They're pretty shocked actually. As a species their very fierce hunters, and usually are successful in bringing large kaiju like Jovis, for the simple reason that they don't give up. Crushing on of their heads is a major milestone, they need to protect their brains from all the stress of fighting large kaiju, and that Jovis crushed one so easilly was a major shocker to the Mauraders. The Cloverfield was a complete coincident, I was more inclined to make them predatory lizard apes/monkeys.

And again thanks for the comment! Especially in regards to perspective!

Hell i would be surprised too! Though i dont why they though he was weak. Jovis looks phenomenally strong and intimidating. Even though he might be a giant teddy bear hes extremely ferocious and ruthless when the time comes. I mean he just picked up one of those things and crushed the hell of it with no effort at all. Jovis is just so phenomenally strong! The Mauraders look like reptilian Cloverfields to me lol. Its interesting to hear you made them after monkeys.

No problem dude!!! You did a truly phenomenal job on this piece!! It was expertly done! It feels like im looking at a movie poster. This piece really has a retro feel to it. I know i always say it but i LOVE Jovis!!!!!!!! :)

When will the next comic page come out? :)

Why thank you! The monkey part is that they leap from ground-to-tree-tree-to-prey, like chimpanzees. But remember, Jovis is far from a giant teddy bear, if he trusts you, he's safe. But if not...

Well, the retro was on purpose, the main inspiration for this scene was from King Kong (the 1930s and 2005 ones).

The next will be coming soon... I hope...

Oh so theyre monkeys in the way they move. I thought you actually wanted them to look like monkeys. I know Jovis isnt a giant teddy bear to everything but to those he does like he is. And even those he doesnt trust he just avoids them unless they attack. But i LOVE Jovis! Im hoping he would trust me lol.

It really does feel like a King Kong piece now that you brought that up! It DEFINITELY has that feeling to it except theyre all reptiles. You did a really awesome job delivering that feeling.

I hope so too. I cant wait to see Jovis enter the comic :)
