- Set 30 years since the event that changed Alia Terra forever, a couple of soldiers while doing a mission deep in the Jungles of Lacerta for reconnaisance, only to discover the existence of a kaiju much, much Larger and Stronger than any they encountered, Jovis. Jovis is currently engaged with some of the fiercest pack hunters of Lacerta, The Marauders. known hunt humans and kaiju alike, since competition on the island is very, very intense. Thinking that Jovis, a slow, pondering usually non-agressive creature would be easy game, they soon will find out why Jovis's species were once the dominant predator of the isle... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- For this holiday, I wanted to do something much more ambitious than past deviations. This took the longest to work with due to the amount of ink and pencil shavings that took just to create the outlines.
For the first time, I used two pieces of lineart and try to make a single image out of it. The main element I want to try out is the light effects, based on the comments from my previous picture with Jovis. I also added blood effects, hopefully not too much that it needs to be put in the "Mature" section.
It was really satisfying to see the difference between this one and my previous deviations. Especially since I have to an Art project on animation over this holiday, and it would be good to try out what I learned here and apply it for school.
Man, this is just... wow. You've really outdone yourself this time, 'kid. You've always been good, IMO, but you've come a long way since stuff like this: [link]
The musculature and anatomy, how well you drew the same creatures from different angles, the shadow work and lighting, the overall composition and sense of motion, the story it tells... this is killer stuff. Seriously, I think there's a lot of professionally done comic book art out there that doesn't look this good. This is a fantastic scene! I could sing it's praises all day, I really could. That wouldn't do you much good besides swell your ego though, so here are my thoughts on how you could make this even better:
- One, I'm just curious, what's the pale green shape in the lower right corner? It looks to me like the mouth of some dead creature, but if so I guess I don't know why it's that color. Is it meant to be glowing? Clearing that up would be nice.
- The gums of the Marauders could use more definition. The green one closest to us is fine but I think the paler ones on Jovis' back could use more detail there, especially the one on the right whose gums are just a solid color. I think the same could be said of their teeth and claws. Everything else seems to have at least subtle shading, but they don't; it makes them seem flatter than the rest of the image.
- I'm not 100% sure on this, but I do think the Marauder leaning over Jovis' shoulder would probably have a stronger shadow than that. It looks like he's right in the path of the sunbeams lighting the scene, so if so he'd be casting a much bigger, darker shadow than what he's got now.
- Just a minor thing, but I think the inside of Jovis' mouth could use more detail. It looks pretty smooth as it is.
To add on to critique #1, yeah it was meant to be brighter, as it's "on the edge" of the cliff/steep drop/something that the soldiers are standing on, but... I always felt something something was off...
